Police guard a hole in the wall at Craigton Cemetery, in Glasgow, where an eight-year-old boy died and two ten year-olds have been injured in an incident inside the cemetery.

An eight-year-old boy has died and two others were injured after they were hit by a falling gravestone in a “tragic accident” in a cemetery.

Ciaran Williamson was seriously injured in Craigton cemetery in the Cardonald area of Glasgow at 7.25pm yesterday.

He was taken to Yorkhill children’s hospital but later died, police said.

His family described the death as a “tragic accident”.

The two other boys, both aged 10, were also taken to hospital for treatment.

One of them remains in Yorkhill, where staff described his condition as stable, and the other has been released after treatment at the new South Glasgow University Hospital.

It is understood that the three boys were hit by a falling gravestone.

Police said they are investigating the full circumstances of the incident but it is not being treated as suspicious.

Floral tributes have been left at the entrance to the cemetery, which has been cordoned off by officers.

Detective Inspector Tom McKean said: “This is such a tragic set of circumstances and our thoughts are with Ciaran’s family.

“Inquiries are ongoing; however, the incident is not being treated as suspicious and a full report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

Glasgow City Council said it is assisting Police Scotland with the investigation.

A council spokesman added: “This is a tragic incident and our hearts go out to the child’s family and friends.”

Many tributes have been paid to Ciaran on social media.

On Twitter, local MSP Humza Yousaf also offered his condolences to the family.

He wrote: “Thoughts with family young boy from Craigton who tragically died from what sounds like freak accident at Craigton Cemetery – very sad indeed.”
