Father of Dundee United star has bail plea rejected as he faces extradition over murder

The father of Dundee United defender Ryan McGowan will remain in custody indefinitely as he awaits extradition to the UK in connection with a murder investigation in Scotland.

Police are keen to question James McGowan in connection with the fatal stabbing of his former brother-in-law Owen Brannigan at a flat in Coatbridge on November 29, 1999.

Mr McGowan was arrested by Australian police in December 2013 and has spent the 15 months since then in custody.

He applied for bail claiming his human rights had been breached but his request was rejected at an Adelaide magistrate’s court this week.

The 56-year-old’s lawyer was told the court did not have the authority to approve bail once an extradition order had been approved.
