Must have head for heights amazing old photos show construction of the first Forth Road Bridge

Anyone travelling across the Forth cannot help but be impressed by the progress being made on construction of the Queensferry Crossing.
But half a century ago the construction of the Forth Road Bridge was an even more dramatic prospect.
Still the largest suspension bridge in Europe, the crossing took six years to build and cost £19.5 million.Click here for the full photo galleryThe 1.6-mile crossing was completed using tools that are far more basic than those available today.
Around 360 men worked on the construction, including divers who laid the foundations of the bridge.
Laid end to end, the wire used for the suspension cables would stretch for more than 30 miles.
These dramatic pictures from the DC Thomson archives show how the bridge we all take for granted today transformed the Forth and the lives of people in Fife and Edinburgh for good.
