Singer Susan Boyle has joined charity collectors on a busy shopping street to try to boost this year’s Scottish Poppy Appeal before the fundraising campaign ends next week.
Money raised is used by the charity to provide direct financial help to veterans and their families and to fund services in areas such as advice, employment, housing and health.
The Britain’s Got Talent star is a strong supporter of Poppyscotland as she has family connections to the military. Her father served with the Royal Engineers in World War 2 and one of her grandfathers was killed in the First World War.
She launched last year’s campaign and was out with collectors on Buchanan Street in Glasgow today as part of the 2013 fundraising drive.
“The Scottish Poppy Appeal is very special to me so I am delighted to be helping again this year and meeting the collectors who do a fantastic job,” Boyle said.
“I really hope that people across Scotland will give as much as they can when they see a poppy tin over the next few days to ensure veterans and their families get the support they need and deserve.”
Poppycotland raises money throughout the year but the Scottish Poppy Appeal is its largest fundraising event.
Colin Flinn, the charity’s head of fundraising, said: “We need to raise as much money as possible through the appeal to deliver vital services for the Armed Forces community in Scotland now and in the future. We’ve had a terrific response from the public over the last couple of weeks and we hope that people will continue to support us over the coming days.”
Scottish Poppy Appeal runs until November 11.
