Speaker leads Westminster praise for Davis Cup champions

Britain’s victory in the “world cup of tennis” was legendary and a superb team effort, Commons Speaker John Bercow has said.

The tennis enthusiast revealed he attended the Davis Cup finals in Ghent, Belgium as a guest of the Lawn Tennis Association.

He paid particular tribute to Andy Murray’s victory over Belgian David Goffin to secure the championship, describing it as “majestic”.

MPs voiced their approval as Mr Bercow congratulated the UK team at the beginning of Monday’s Commons business.

The Speaker said: “As a guest of the Lawn Tennis Association it was my pleasure and privilege to be present in Ghent to observe the Davis Cup final over the weekend.

“I feel sure that the whole House will wish to join me in expressing congratulations to the victorious British team.

“Captained by Leon Smith, it featured Andy Murray, Jamie Murray, James Ward, Kyle Edmund, Dan Evans and Dominic Inglot.

“It was a superb team effort to secure the cup and be the world champions of tennis for the first time for Britain since 1936.

“How fitting it was that the victory was sealed by a performance both outstanding and majestic by Andy Murray.

“We congratulate each and every one of them.”
