Some comments about comments

One of the biggest changes on the new Courier site is the commenting system and it’s time to address some of the points people have made.

We wanted to make it even easier for you to debate the issues raised in our reports, and we have been delighted to see almost 10,000 comments submitted since the new site went public.

However, as with all new things some issues have arisen.

So let’s look at the main questions asked so far.Why did my comment not appear? We have moved to a post-moderation system so, all being well, your comment should appear as soon as posted.

However, for obvious reasons there are filters in place which hold comments for us to check if certain words are used.

We are still refining the dictionary of banned words, and until that is finished you may find your perfectly innocent comment is flagged up and held.

In these cases, your comment will appear once we have had a chance to check it. But you can always query by emailingonline@thecourier.co.uk.Why did you approve THAT comment? Our new post-moderation system means comments can appear before we have seen them.

We may later remove comments we regard as abusive , but the onus is now on you as commenter to ensure your post is not abusive or defamatory. If in doubt, don’t post.

If you see a comment you think should be removed, hover over it and click the red flag that appears.

This ensures it is brought to our attention.

You can also emailonline@thecourier.co.ukto highlight anything you think should be removed. Why did you remove my comment? If your comment is published, and then later disappears, you have most likely contravened our Terms & Conditions.

We want our site to be a place for lively but civil debate, and we will not accept swearing or abusive posts.

We will also remove comments that make direct and unsubstantiated accusations.

We do value the tip-offs that come from our users, but if you have a specific allegation that you think we should investigate, please emailonline@thecourier.co.ukand we will follow it up.How can I remove my comment?Post in haste, repent at leisure.

We regularly receive requests from users to remove comments they later decided they wished they hadn’t posted.

In most cases, you should be able to remove your own comment. Just hover over it and choose the option that appears.

However, if you need help in removing a comment email online@thecourier.co.uk and we’ll consider your request.

We hope you agree with our efforts to promote healthy debate.
