Carnoustie’s Commonwealth cash waste

Carnoustie’s Commonwealth cash waste

Sir, Am I the only one who cannot wait for the Commonwealth Games to disappear as, being a resident of Carnoustie, I look at all the waste of money spent on this area alone?

The local hotel looks like it has been turned into a jail and the landmark clock on the front of the hotel has been covered.

Additional roads have been formed to ferry competitors and freeloaders to the competition venue where new buildings have been built and are to be knocked down after the game why?

Golfers’ car parks have been closed, so all the streets in the golf course vicinity are clogged up with golfers parking, making it difficult for locals to get in and out their drives.

I have never seen so many police cars roaming about where do they go on Friday and Saturday nights when they are most needed?

One good thing to come out of this is we actually saw two policemen walking the street (during the day). This must be a first for a long time.

I won’t mention the waste of money on the baton fiasco.

I would hate to hear about the horrors going on just now in Glasgow if Carnoustie is anything to go by.

Help clear the national debt put the games elsewhere.

Thomas G. Mitchell, Links Avenue, Carnoustie, Angus.

Why not use spaceport to get rid of our useless folk?

Sir, We read about the possibility of a spaceport being built in Scotland. What great news.

No, not because of the usual unsubstantiated monetary and other possibilities being already trotted out by those with vested interests.

I am talking about the great opportunity to send all our greedy fat cat business types, untrustworthy investment bankers and dodgy financial advisers in the City, the raft of useless politicians both at Holyrood and Westminster and all the riff-raff who cause havoc in our country, on flights into space on a one-wayticket.

Just think of the benefits both societal and economic if we did this.

Ah bliss, perfect bliss.

Robert T. Smith, Braeside Terrace, Aberdeen.

Independence is great chance for all atheists

Sir, Independence is a great opportunity for atheists and other god-free people to influence the written constitution of a new Scotland.

A constitution which expressly guaranteed “freedom from religion” would enable all Scots to live their lives without interference from the godly.

The civil rights and status of women would also be enhanced by a constitution which guaranteed protection from religious, sexist and misogynist practices such as forced marriage and the wearing of face veils in public.

Independence would also end the farce of the 26 bishops of the Church of England who sit, as of right, in the House of Lords passing laws to the detriment of all Scots and not just atheists.

Fair city has too many blots on its landscape

Sir, I agree wholeheartedly with the letter in The Courier about the former St Paul’s Church being a “blot” on the city and I have to ask is it ever going to be turned into a restaurant?

Sadly, it is not the only “blot” on our fair city. There is the former Caledonian Road School bought for development into flats but no work started after at least two years.

Then there is the Waverley Hotel complex no interest in this “for sale” building, empty shops in High Street and in St John’s Centre and the “hole in the ground” where the Plough Inn used to be on Burghmuir Road.

Lastly, the “City Hall Saga”. The only credible offer has been made by the PCMT. I would urge the council to support this proposal without delay.

Salmond has truly divided Scots society

Sir, I must agree with Jed Cormie (letters, June 24) that Alex Salmond is a divisive “power-hungry” individual who considers there’s nothing as wonderful as the sound of his own voice.

The potential break-up of Britain has had a pernicious effect on people which has led to the breakdown of social cohesion in Scotland.

If Alex Salmond has any trace of humility he should step down from public life, whatever the referendum outcome.

Thomas Murray Tayside Street, Carnoustie.

Uniformly bad

Sir, Come back Jack McConnell, your kilt gaffe in New York is nothing to compare with the Scottish Commonwealth Games uniform.
