New students welcomed

Fresh faces—freshers at yesterday’s reception, including some reading a special edition of The Courier.

MORE THAN 1500 freshers, about to embark on a new life at Abertay University, were promised some of the best social facilities in the country when they were welcomed to Dundee yesterday.

Vice-principal Professor Mike Swanston—addressing this year’s intake at a reception in Caird Hall—said the Bell Street student centre currently under construction would include a debating chamber, a theatre and cinema complex, an exhibition space and social and leisure facilities.

He added, “Life as a student is not just about studying, it is also about social and cultural development.

“You can’t miss the building work that has started in Bell Street. For a time, there will be some noise and disturbance but it is going to be one of the best student centres in Scotland.”

Professor Swanston said the Abertay community was “truly international” with more than 60 nationalities represented within the student body.

“We are delighted that so many of you have chosen the University of Abertay Dundee and especially so many from other countries,” he said.

“We are all very proud of our university and I know that you will share our pride in it.”

The vice-principal described the many new courses and developments taking place at Abertay, highlighting dedicated drop-in centres for counselling, student services and learning and skills advice.

Students’ Association president Dawn Fisher gave a series of presentations to the students—who had earlier been welcomed to the city by Lord Provost John Letford—on getting the most out of their time at university.

Throughout the day, university staff helped students familiarise themselves with the city by escorting them on 45-minute tours.
