Teenager jumping for GB

Keir at a training session with coach Katrina Hands.

KEIR STEWART (17), a member of Tigger’s Tramps Trampoline Club in Newport, is representing Great Britain for the first time at the World Age Group Games in Germany at the end of the month.

He will have a busy week as he is competing in three events in the 17+ men’s section. Firstly, as part of the GB team of four in the trampoline competition, then in the synchronised trampolining competition with his partner Matthew Swaffer (Gillingham) and finally in the double mini trampoline competition.

Keir has been training at Tigger’s since he was six and has been working with his coach, Katrina Hands, since the age of seven.

Katrina, who works in the division of applied computing at the University of Dundee, will also be travelling with the British squad, which numbers over 90, as Keir’s personal coach and as a team chaperone.

Keir has had considerable success throughout his competitive career, including being the youngest to become Scottish men’s national champion when he was only 14.

This year Keir was sixth in the British national championships in the senior men’s double mini trampoline competition—a huge achievement considering that he only started training seriously in this discipline six months before. He was also seventh in the under-18 age group at the British National Trampoline Championships. It is his consistent performances that have secured him the GB team places.

Katrina said yesterday, “It has been an extremely busy year for Keir as he had had to fit his training and competitions around studying for his Highers, in which he achieved excellent grades. He also made it through to the final 20 males in the BBC programme Born to Win after undergoing a number of gruelling physical testing sessions.”

Keir will be joined by Caitlin Thomson, from Flyer’s Trampoline Club in Glenrothes, as the only two Scottish trampolinists to make the British team. Caitlin will be competing in the under-15 girls age group, competing in the individual and synchronised trampolining classes.

People can contact Tigger’s Tramps through Waterstone Crook Sports Centre, Newport.
