MSPs applaud Pop Idol’s achievement

THE SUCCESS of Scottish Pop Idol sensation Michelle McManus has been formally recognised by MSPs, writes Steve Bargeton, political editor.

A motion laid before the Scottish Parliament applauds her on becoming the first Scottish female singer to enter the charts at number one with her debut single.

Members of all parties have put their names to the motion in the name of Scottish Socialist Caroline Leckie.

In it the politicians say that Michelle’s “fantastic success story blazes a trail for Scottish women who want to follow their dreams, and further believes that Scotland should be proud and supportive of those shining stars that we have in every community.”

Michelle made history this week when her debut single All This Time shot straight to number one.

First Minister Jack McConnell was one of the 10 million people who voted for Michelle in the final of the Pop Idol contest.
