WHAT IS thought to be the largest bag of chips in Scotland, weighing in at over 60 lb (27.39 kg), was served up at The Kittiwake in Broughty Ferry yesterday.

The fry-up was part of National Chip Week, which runs until Sunday.

Manager Gerald Savage and chef James Adam filled their three fryers with 4400 chips.

It took 30 minutes to cook the mammoth portion.

The chips, which were supplied by McKeans, are now on display on the front of the bar, where they will remain for a few days.

The Kittiwake uses 48,000 chips every week, but this is by far the biggest bag they have ever attempted to make.

Mr Savage had originally hoped to be able to make the biggest chip in Scotland but his plans were dashed with the lack of large potatoes that suppliers McKeans could find.

“It just isn’t the right time of year to get really big potatoes, so the biggest chip idea went out the window,” he said.

“We then decided to make the biggest bag of chips,” added Mr Savage.

“It didn’t take that long but it has been successful.

“Hopefully, next year we can go for the biggest ever chip.”

There are 38,000 tonnes of chips consumed in Britain every week—the equivalent of 5500 double decker buses according to the British Potato Council.

National Chip Week celebrates chips in all shapes and forms—from homemade, to takeaway, frozen from the supermarket and ones eaten in restaurants.
