Violinist Laura to star on Broadway

A TALENTED young musician from Monifieth is to perform on Broadway as part of New York’s Tartan Day celebrations on April 6.

Violinist Laura McGhee (24), a former pupil of Monifieth High School, has been invited to take part in the event that marks the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath and celebrates the major role Scottish Americans played in the founding of the United States.

Laura will perform as a soloist in the Matt McGinn 75th anniversary tribute concert taking place at the Symphony Space in celebration of the great Scottish songwriter.

She will be playing a number of Matt McGinn’s folk songs alongside American country singer Terry Winchell, in a show that will also see appearances from Karen Matheson and Donald Shaw from Capercaillie.

Also taking in the Tartan Day celebrations will be Scotland’s First Minister Jack McConnell who is set to speak on the role of the new Scottish government at Columbia University on April 5.

Laura last night said the trip would be a wonderful opportunity to represent her country abroad and further her fledgling musical career.

She said, “It will be a privilege and a great opportunity to meet and work with other musicians and playing in New York will be fantastic.

“I’m making my career out of music by freelancing and teaching and I’m writing and recording my own music as well.”
