Pop star faces driving ban

JAMIROQUAI frontman Jay Kay faces a driving ban after he was clocked doing 105 mph on a Perthshire road.

Now the multi-million selling pop star has been told to find time in his busy international schedule to appear personally today at Perth Sheriff Court for sentence.

The singer, famed for his outrageous taste in hats and passion for fast cars, was caught by traffic police on the notorious A9 Inverness to Perth road as he sped south from his Scottish hideaway.

In a letter to the court the star, under his real name of Jason Kay, admits exceeding the speed limit on a dual carriageway 70 mph section on February 26.

By way of explanation Jay Kay says he was returning from his house in Gairloch to England for an important appointment.

“I had set out early in the morning but had become stuck behind slow moving traffic on the single carriageway roads which meant that I had by this stage been travelling for four hours at an average of about 30 mph,” said the singer, whose address was given as Horsenden Manor, Horsenden.

“At the time of the incident I had been on a long stretch of single carriageway when I came to a section of dual carriageway.

“Wishing to overtake a number of slow moving vehicles I pulled into the overtaking lane and sped up.

“This was a downhill section of the roadway and unfortunately during the course of this manoeuvre my speed regrettably increased more than I had intended.

“As I was completing my manoeuvre I encountered a mobile police speed check.

“In mitigation I would wish to say that at the time of the offence the driving conditions were good, it was daylight and the road surface was dry.

“I would also wish to say that I wasn’t driving a fast sports car, but a four-wheel drive vehicle which meant that I wanted to make the most of my overtaking opportunity.

“At present I have six points on my licence, three points from September 2001 and a further three points from May 2003.

“I drive very many miles each year and my driving licence is extremely important to me. I appreciate that the maximum penalty for this offence could lead to the loss of my licence and this is of course a matter of grave concern.

“While I appreciate these factors cannot diminish the fact that I was travelling in excess of the speed limit, I would wish them to be taken into account when I am sentenced and would respectfully ask the court for its leniency.”

Sentence has been deferred until today for his personal appearance, though it is understood his lawyer will say he is unable to attend as he is currently in America and ask for an adjournment.

Over the past 12 years Jay Kay has built up an international following with several hit singles.

Due to his popularity he is immensely wealthy and has used some of his income to build up a collection of classic cars.
