Council denies snub to regiment

MONTROSE campaigner Syd Mather was given reassurance yesterday by Angus Council that his request for his petition to save The Black Watch to be placed in council premises was not being ignored.

Disappointment has been expressed by Mr Mather at the lack of any sign of support from Angus Council, and the failure to acknowledge his direct request for help from the council’s chief executive, Sandy Watson. To date he has received no response to his request to place his petition in council premises.

A spokesman for the council confirmed the request from Mr Mather had been received late last Thursday afternoon. Since the council was in recess she said the request had been passed to elected members for their consideration.

Angus Council had not had a meeting to discuss the issue of the Black Watch campaign, she added, which would explain why the council hadn’t taken a position. But she stressed that Angus provost Bill Middleton had immediately voiced support for the campaign from the outset.
