By Steve Bargeton, political editor THERE HAS been a massive response to the campaign to impeach Prime Minister Tony Blair for his actions in relation to the Iraq war. Such has been the interest that the website set up to publicise the parliamentary campaign last weekend crashed. There were over a thousand hits in the first hour after the news broke last Wednesday of the extraordinary attempt to try to impeach Mr Blair. The campaign website crashed the following day due to exceptionally high traffic and had to be switched to new servers. Over last weekend 10,000 copies of the report, “A Case to Answer,” which outlines the charges against Mr Blair, have been downloaded from the website. However, campaigners say that only “several hundred people” have registered their support on the website. One of the prime movers in the campaign, MP Alex Salmond—hotly tipped to be voted in as the new leader of the SNP tomorrow—said, “The level of traffic on the site shows there is real public support to bring the Prime Minister to account for his actions in Iraq and in particular for taking the country to war based on a lie. “People have had enough of the establishment cover ups to get the Prime Minister off the hook for lying to Parliament. “It is now time to ensure that Blair is answerable for his actions in misleading the country and Parliament and bring this sorry affair to a conclusion.” Fellow campaigner, Plaid Cymru MP Adam Price, said, “For this campaign to be successful we have to make sure that the public is made to feel a part of the campaign. “One way of achieving this is to create a state-of-the-art website where the latest news and ideas of how the public can get involved can be accessed 24 hours a day. “In order for this to happen we need to access more funds and we will be actively looking for sponsorship deals and donations over the coming weeks,” he added. |
