A NEWBORN baby has brought tears of joy to a Fife mother whose partner was tragically killed in a road accident almost two months ago. Twenty-eight-year-old Faith Nicholson said Robert McDougall “would have just adored” little Robyn Skye McDougall Nicholson. She said he had “so been looking forward to being a dad” and would have been “over the moon” with his baby daughter. Robert (33), who lived with Faith in Buchanan Park, Ceres, died on July 22 after his motor cycle collided with roadside posts on the Peat Inn to Crail road. The accident happened when Faith had just seven weeks left of her pregnancy. Robert worked as a postman in St Andrews and, ironically, at the time of the accident, had changed to an early shift in Anstruther so that he could spend more time with her and attend maternity classes. But the sadness which followed the loss of Robert was brightened a week past Friday when baby Robyn was born at Forth Park Hospital in Kirkcaldy, weighing 6lb, 71/2oz. Cradling little Robyn at home yesterday, Faith told The Courier she had been in labour for 20 hours and the whole experience had been very emotional. But she had been accompanied throughout by her mother Jean with staff going out of their way to help. Her father John had been allowed in to see her just hours after the early morning birth. It had also been an emotional experience for members of Robert’s family including his brother Stephen who travelled from his home in the south of England to lend his support, as well as visits by Robert’s grandmother Ellen and uncle Jackie. Yesterday Faith said she wanted to thank everyone for their support, especially Robert’s former work colleagues at Royal Mail, neighbours and friends who had visited, made phone calls to her and sent messages and cards of support. She revealed that Royal Mail workers in St Andrews were compiling a Memories book based on their own personal memories of Robert. For example, one former colleague had recalled the day when Robert trapped his fingers in a door whilst another recalled that he made great shortbread! Faith said Robyn and Skye were names the couple had chosen together and said the addition of McDougall was a tribute to Robert and his family. Bravely fighting back tears, she added, “He would have just adored Robyn. He was so looking forward to being a dad. He was going to be very much hands-on. He would have been over the moon.” |
