Families who shaped Forfar

FABULOUS FORFAR families who played key roles in shaping the burgh are to be celebrated at an exhibition in the town.

They will come under the spotlight during The Meffan’s autumn/winter display being prepared by museum staff.

They are collecting exhibits telling the stories of the families, part of a long tradition of prominent citizens, whose members went on to become successful business people.

Many never forgot their roots and were also great benefactors to the town and its people, helping mould it into the Forfar of today.

One of the families being highlighted are the Meffans.

Miss Jane Meffan left money to help create the institute in the town bearing her family name and which opened in 1898.

Her father, William Meffan, and brother, Patrick Meffan, were former provosts.

The museum aims to spell out exactly what each family did to help improve Forfar, through items including photos, paintings, letters and objects.

Staff are also hoping to learn more about interesting Forfar people and families by encouraging those dropping in to tell of the good they have done for the town.

The display will run from October 2 to December 30.
