Julian the tank back in view

The postcard of Julian on his visit to Dundee, but where exactly?

THE STORY of Julian the tank has cropped up several times during our campaign to save The Black Watch.

Julian toured major UK population centres to raise money for a final push in the first world war effort.

Dundee and its neighbouring counties raised £4.5 million, a huge sum in those days and one of the highest per capita amounts in Britain.

Julian eventually took up residence in Aberdeen, at the beach end of Union Street, where he remained until at least the beginning of the second world war.

Ian Hendry of Dundee has provided us with a postcard taken during Julian’s visit to Dundee. Most photographs from Dundee Tank Week show Julian surrounded by crowds in the city centre.

Mr Hendry’s photograph, however, shows the tank’s capabilities being demonstrated somewhere in the city.

It is not clear where the photograph was taken but it is just possible to pick out what look like ships’ masts to the right of the picture.

Any readers who can help identify the location can call 01382 575299.
