By Stewart Ross ALLEGATIONS OF a betting scam at Raith Rovers have been completely dismissed after a Scottish Football League investigation. The club’s former chairmen Turnbull Hutton and director Willie Gray were called to a meeting with the SFL after the allegations made by a newspaper in June. It was claimed £250,000 was successfully staked on the Kirkcaldy side losing at Ayr United on May 15—former manager Antonio Calderon’s last match in charge of Raith. Raith themselves quickly conducted an internal inquiry when the claims surfaced and found no evidence of gambling at Stark’s Park. Yesterday, SFL secretary Peter Donald read a brief statement following a private meeting into the matter. “After a full investigation by the management committee (of the SFL) into betting on the result of the Ayr versus Raith Rovers match of May 15, and with the full co-operation of the betting industry and Raith Rovers, we have found no evidence of match fixing or that any official of Raith Rovers placed a bet or bets on the match.” Raith secretary Eric Drysdale said, “I am pleased that the club’s name has been cleared and that there was no proof of any wrong-doing. Hopefully now, with our new manager, we can put recent difficulties behind us and move forward.” |
