Restoration work at kirk

Ian MacDonald of Cumming & Co prepares the windows for the new look oak louvres.

ST JOHN’S Kirk which is synonymous with Perth—the church gave rise to Perth’s alternative name of St John’s toun—has been undergoing some high profile work.

Restoration and upkeep of the medieval church is almost constant, but pedestrians can hardly have failed to notice the removal of the towering stained glass window overlooking St John Street in recent days.

The north end of the church is shrouded in scaffolding while the work is carried out.

A church has stood on the site from the 12th century and the present building took shape in the 1400 and 1500s.

Workman around the kirk have been an almost permanent fixture over the centuries with major restorations carried out in the 1820s, 1890s and 1920s.
