THE SPECTACULAR sight of acres of snowdrops at Cambo Estate at Kingsbarns in the East Neuk will this weekend be available to members of the public for the final time of the growing season. The annual flowering of tens of thousands of the bulbs has become something of a pilgrimage for nature lovers in recent years, but this season visitor numbers have been badly hit by closures on the main coast road close to Cambo. Yesterday Faye Smith, who works at the estate, said that during the entire season the A917 has been closed for roadworks each weekend at Kingsbarns. This, she added, had caused a fair amount of disruption to those trying to make their way to the snowdrops, if not putting some people off entirely. Faye said for this final weekend, however, the roads department has agreed to keep the road open, and this would allow normal access for everyone. “The 70 acres of woodland, carpeted in snowdrops, snowflakes and aconites, follow the Cambo burn to the sea and are an amazing spectacle, as are the 200 varieties of specialist snowdrops in the gardens themselves,” she said. “There is still a wide range of specialist snowdrops, hellebores and other spring plants on sale as well as the snowdrops, snow-flakes and aconites.” * Admiring the snowdrops yesterday were Suzy Glass and James Erskine. |
