Photo archive to go on show

This picture is believed to date from the 1920s or 30s—but the location and identities of the people are not known.

PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN by well-known Brechin artist David Waterson between the 1880s and early 1940s can be viewed by the public, for the first time, later this month.

About 100 of Waterson’s photographs, part of a collection of 1400 held by Angus Council cultural services department, will be shown at one of two lectures to be put on in the Mechanics Institute by Brechin Civic Trust and The Friends of Brechin Town House Museum on March 30.

Over the past two years Brian Mitchell of the trust and Jim Sneddon, of Brechin Photographic Society, have been cataloguing this important collection of glass negatives, some of which may have been used by the artist when composing his paintings.

Many are of the Brechin area or of Brechiners and visitors to the town, but others are from elsewhere. Some are readily recognisable but many are still a mystery. “For example, said Mr Mitchell, “one of the photographs is of a group of children but we have no idea where the photo was taken or who the youngsters are. We would welcome any information on them.”
