High’s cup bid buoyed by embarrassment of riches

DUNDEE HSFP’s coach Ian Rankin has several selection dilemmas for tomorrow’s BT Cup quarter-final rematch with Hawick at Mansfield Park, but that is a welcome exception to this season so far.

Dundee head to the Greens’ stronghold hoping that their recent cup record, illustrated by the run to the final last year and big victories this season against GHA and Stirling County, will work away from Mayfield as well.

For the first time this season, the coach has to ponder his selection in advance, he admitted.

“Picking the team has been pretty easy this season as it’s mostly been who was left standing, but this week we have just about everyone available,” he explained.

“In the past week we’ve had Colin Whittaker and Alan Brown return after long spells out.

“Big Alan has been struggling with illness and injury problems for nearly a year but he’s back to his best again and Hawick will no doubt remember the great try he scored against them in last year’s semi-final.”

That famous win was at Mayfield, and Rankin is under no illusions about the magnitude of repeating the feat in the Borders.

“We caught them unawares last year and I know we’re not going to surprise them like that again,” he said.

“However, I had a good look at them beating Musselburgh at the weekend so hopefully we’ve found some things we can target.

“The cup has been a huge boost for us again this season and the mentality required for this competition seems to suit us, so we’re going down there looking to keep the run going, with the carrot of a home semi-final for the win.”

There is one other outstanding club game rescheduled for this weekend, with Perthshire, already assured of the National League Two title and promotion, going to the Borders to face second-placed Langholm.
