To the delight of staff at the Loch of the Lowes wildlife reserve, near Dunkeld, its pair of breeding ospreys arrived bang on time on Monday. Nerves were calmed as they survived the migration from west Africa to return on the same day as the visitor centre re-opened for the 2005 season. Staff will now ensure the pair can breed in safety, free from the threat posed by egg thieves. Ospreys have bred at the Loch of the Lowes since 1969. The present female has managed to raise 38 chicks over the past 14 years. |
