“Enjoyable lunchtimes” with canteen makeover

Enjoying the new facilities are Flynn Rankin, Paige McLellan, Jasmine Samson, James Picken and William Davidson.

PUPILS AT Canongate Primary School in St Andrews are enjoying tasty treats in their new canteen.

The canteen has been transformed thanks to investment from the Scottish Executive and bright ideas from the school’s pupil council.

The serving hatch has been replaced with hot and cold display units, allowing the children to see the food, and the dining environment has been enhanced with tablecloths, plants and music CDs.

The class of the week has the honour of choosing which CD is played the following week.

Small blackboards and a large display board are used to highlight the varieties of rolls and soup on offer and to tempt pupils to try particular items on the menu.

There are also three new recycling bins.

Making the surroundings more welcoming was down to the pupil council members, who consulted classes, costed the most popular suggestions and obtained approval.

Pupil council representative Jennifer Rae said the response from pupils to the makeover has been tremendous.

She said, “It was good being involved in deciding how our dining facilities should change. The fun part was looking at the catalogues and choosing what would be best for our school. Everybody finds lunchtime enjoyable now.”

The Executive awarded the school grants totalling £950 for the revamp under the Hungry For Success and Determined To Succeed programmes.
