Epic hike in name of friendship

A Charleston man enjoyed a well-earned rest yesterday after completing 200 miles to raise money for Down’s Syndrome Scotland.

Jim Maison started his journey a week last Friday from Acharacle on the west coast of Scotland and finished yesterday afternoon in Auchmithie.

He completed the trek as part of the 26th Great Outdoors Challenge, and during his journey crossed Loch Shiel, Glen Coe, Rannoch Moor, Gaick Pass and Glen Prosen.

In Montrose yesterday, Mr Maison said he had decided to do the crossing to raise money for the worthwhile charity because of his friend Alistair Watt, who suffers from the condition.

And he said that, although this was his fifth crossing, it was probably the hardest because he was very ill for part of it.

“I picked up a virus on the first day out,” he explained.

“I had three days when it was just monstrous.”

Despite the illness, Mr Maison completed the trek and managed to raise £1874.

Mr Watt’s mum Ann added, “Bless Jim, he has done this because of his friendship with Alistair.”
