IVAN GOLAC, the only manager to have led Dundee United to Scottish Cup glory, returned to Tannadice yesterday, writes Graeme Dey and Lynne Stewart. Golac—back in the City of Discovery to participate in the build-up to Saturday when he will be a guest of the club at Hampden—was shown round the hospitality suite at United’s stadium which is named in his honour. And Golac’s guide, chairman Eddie Thompson, revealed the man who masterminded that never-to-be-forgotten defeat of Rangers will be meeting up this weekend with several of the men who played under him. “Joining Ivan as our guest will be Craig Brewster and Brian Welsh, while David Bowman will of course be around, too,” said Thompson. Golac is presently working part-time as an advisor to Ukrainian second division club Karpaty whom he was manager of until 18 months ago. “It’s always nice to come back here because the Arabs will never forget what happened 11 years ago,” he said. “I was over for the 10th anniversary celebrations last year and enjoyed that very much. “It’s going to be an interesting game on Saturday. “Just like 11 years ago this team is playing one of the two big boys. “But recent events have I think given Dundee United a slight advantage and if they adopt the same attacking approach we did in 1994 they’ll have a chance.” Golac later teamed up with sports pundit Tam Cowan for a special cup final edition of the BBC’s Offside programme filmed at the Caird Hall last night. He was joined by United legend Dave Bowman and Craig Brewster, who scored the only goal of the match that ensured the Tannadice team lifted the trophy for the first time. The 1200 tickets issued by the show’s producers were snapped up within a week by fans who wanted to join in the big match build-up and reminisce with their heroes of yesteryear. The programme will be screened on BBC1 Scotland tomorrow night at 11.05 pm. |
