THE MOST famous cow in Perthshire has defied the laws of nature and, against all odds, produced offspring, shocked farming leaders have revealed. Bertha, the eye-catching Perth Show mascot who tours local towns to promote the event, is now a mother—despite being bright blue and made of fibreglass. Mercifully, the agricultural show’s organisers remained silent yesterday on how such a thing could occur, instead continuing their efforts to draw tens of thousands of people back to the ever-popular South Inch gathering. More than 30,000 people are expected to enjoy Perth Show on August 5 and 6, with sideshows, community stalls, trade stands and competitions—all involving flesh-and-blood animals. “Perthshire Agricultural Society is delighted to announce the safe arrival of a strapping bull calf for a very proud Mum Bertha, the Perth Show blue coo,” the society’s secretary, Neil Forbes, said yesterday. “The directors would like to let everyone know that both cow and calf are very well and have already formed a strong bond with each other.” He continued, “Although we are more than thrilled with the little chap there is one problem. He is currently nameless.” Plans are afoot to involve Perthshire’s primary schools in naming the calf, with a competition which, subject to some final arrangements, will see an entire class of youngsters winning tickets to Perth Show. In addition, their school will received vouchers from competition sponsors Active Kid Toys, of Burnside, Stanley. |
