Dens hosts match of the day

What a team! Anthony Brewington and Sandra Wilson celebrate their wedding on the pitch at Dens Park on Saturday.

THE FOOTBALL season may be over, but Dens Park played host to another type of match on Saturday— the first civil marriage ceremony on the stadium’s hallowed turf.

Football-daft Anthony Brewington (30) wed Sandra Wilson (42) in the centre circle on the pitch at the Dundee FC stadium in front of 150 guests.

They are only the second couple to get married at the stadium and the first since legislation allowing local authorities to accept applications for civil marriages outwith registration offices came into force in 2002.

Groom Anthony, a season ticket holder at Dens, said, “I suggested that we got married here for a joke, but Sandra surprised me by saying yes.”

Sandra added, “Anthony’s mad about the club and he’s got me interested, too.

“Marrying at Dens Park makes our wedding a bit unusual—it’s a nice feeling to be the first couple to be married at the ground.

“I’ve got a few Dundee fans in my family so they’re happy. I also surprised Anthony with a Dundee engagement cake.”

There were loud cheers from the couple’s friends and family gathered in the main stand when Sandra and Anthony said ‘I do’.

Both have vowed to return to Dens Park next season to give the Dark Blues their full support in the first division.

Following the wedding, the couple had their reception at the club, before leaving for their honeymoon in Mexico.

It is anticipated that more couples may now choose to swap walking down the aisle for walking down the tunnel, taking their first steps on the road of marriage at a football stadium.
