Staff and pupils at a Dundee secondary school were in shock yesterday after one of its longest- serving teachers died after collapsing during a five-a-side football match. Dr Douglas Allan (43), principal teacher of computing at Menzieshill High School, was playing football at the school on Thursday afternoon when he collapsed. Paramedics were unable to revive Mr Allan and it is understood he was pronounced dead at the scene. He had taught at the school for nearly 18 years. The sports day, due to take place yesterday afternoon, was cancelled as a mark of respect. Head teacher Ian Jones said everyone at the school had been left stunned by Dr Allan’s sudden death. “Obviously everyone at Menzieshill is devastated by Doug’s untimely death,” he said. “Doug was a tremendously well-respected principal teacher and an excellent teacher and friend to everyone here. “He will be sadly missed by staff and pupils alike. “We are obviously keeping Doug’s family in our thoughts at this time.” Dr Allan joined Menzieshill High School in 1987. He had previously taught maths at Ardrossan Academy in Ayrshire. |
