THERE WERE emotional scenes as four former pupils of Rockwell Primary School in Dundee were yesterday reunited with their old teacher for the first time in over 60 years.

Kathleen Hope, Isabel Webster, Betty Taylor and Margaret Miln, all 78, enjoyed a chat about old times with former teacher Mary (May) Sutton, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

The four women, who regularly meet up, decided to visit Miss Sutton after seeing a Press picture of her on the day of her birthday in February.

Miss Sutton was their class teacher in 1933 and they described her as “the best we had.”

“She was our teacher in 1933 when we were six,” said Kathleen. “She was the best teacher of the lot. She was tall with black hair pulled back in a bun.

“We saw the picture of Miss Sutton in the Evening Telegraph when she was 100. The next time we met everyone said, ‘Oh, did you see that picture?’ and all the old memories came flooding back.

“When we met up again we were still talking about it and decided we really would like to see her.”

The former pupils visited Miss Sutton at St Margaret’s Home in Victoria Road yesterday morning.

Miss Sutton was born and brought up in the city and attended Butterburn Primary School before winning a bursary to attend Morgan Academy.

She studied at Dundee Teacher Training College from 1923-1925.

Her first teaching post was at Stobswell Supplementary, followed by a move to St Patrick’s Primary.

In 1931 Miss Sutton began teaching at Rockwell Primary, remaining there until her retirement in 1966.
