Plans to hold mini summit in Fife

The great divide—the security fencing around Gleneagles for the G8 summit stretches into the distance.

FIRST MINISTER Jack McConnell is planning to hold a “mini summit” in Fife in the middle of the G8 meeting of world leaders in Perthshire, The Courier can exclusively reveal.

It is understood invitations have been sent out to United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan and South African President Thabo Mbeki for a top level conference in the St Andrews area.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 7, the second day of the G8 summit at Gleneagles Hotel.

Mr Annan and Mr Mbeki are attending the G8 summit to give their input to the issues of Africa and the environment but are not part of the elite G8 group.

Mr McConnell is understood to be keen to take advantage of their presence in Scotland to promote Scotland’s interests.

Issues for discussion are likely to include Mr McConnell’s Fresh Talent initiative to attract key workers to Scotland, and promoting Scotland abroad.

Last night the First Minister’s official spokesperson said Mr McConnell was keen to promote Scotland during the G8 summit.

“The First Minister wants to make the most of the opportunities the summit affords,” she said.

“Clearly with his close interest in Africa, he would want to engage where possible with the leaders coming to Scotland.”

The First Minister will also host a media reception at Gleneagles Hotel during the summit.
