Hardliners hit at peaceful protests

A GROUP of Dutch protesters gave an early indication of possible trouble ahead when they arrived in Auchterarder insisting peaceful demonstrations achieve nothing.

Decked in head-scarfs, members of the Eurodusnie Collective said the authorities were “determined to stop people having an opinion.”

One of them—Marco—said it was time to show G8 world leaders that a change in world order is necessary.

He and his socialist group had arrived in Scotland on Friday to protest against the G8 and took part in demonstrations in Edinburgh on Monday.

“We were at the Carnival For Full Enjoyment on Monday and felt we had to be here today as well,” he said.

Reflecting on violent scenes in the capital which resulted in almost 100 arrests he added, “It is scandalous that eight men control the world and it is time for a change. The only legally sanctioned march close to Gleneagles is not going to question the system.

“People going to bed starving is the real violence—not a few windows getting smashed or bottles being thrown.

“We cannot guarantee protests here will be peaceful.

“We must make a clear statement—peaceful protests do not have any effect.”
