SUN-BLESSED Kirriemuir Show proved a scorcher in more ways than one at the weekend—setting a new record for visitor numbers. The estimated 7000 crowd which flocked to Muirhouses Farm made it a memorable swansong for show secretary Dorothy Henderson, who bowed out from the role on Saturday after 15 years in the job. “It was a bit of a nostalgic day for me, but the success of it all meant I went out on a high,” she explained. “I can’t thank everyone enough who has supported us over the years and the directors for all their hard work in pulling the show together. “It has grown considerably over the years and continues to be highly regarded.” Among some of the firsts for Kirrie was the arrival of the prestigious Scottish National Charolais Show, bringing exhibitors the length and the breadth of the country to the Wee Red Town. Kirriemuir District Agricultural Association, behind the extravaganza, landed the contest, which has previously been staged in Aberdeenshire and Perth. Livestock and vintage entries reached a record 1000 and there was a host of entertainment for adults and children across the show ground. As she departed, Dorothy revealed the event, established in 1877, will be held at Muirhead of Logie next year, courtesy of farmers George and Joe Aitken. An agreement has been reached for a permanent show field to be created there for at least the next five years. Dorothy continued, “The show has increased in size so much it is hard to find a field big enough to accommodate it all. “George and Joe have been big supporters of the association and had a field they wanted to lend to us.” Next year’s event will be held on July 15.
