Flamenco fever grips festival

THE CITY of Discovery was gripped by flamenco fever on Saturday for the penultimate night of the Dundee Guitar Festival.

Now in its 15th year, the festival is renowned for attracting the biggest names of the classical guitar world to Dundee, and this year’s event has been no different, showcasing a range of international artistes performing in a myriad of styles.

As well as staging more than a dozen concerts during the festival, several performers have also taken part in special masterclasses where they have been passing on some of their skills to up-and-coming guitarists.

Headlining this year’s festival was Spanish sensation Gerardo Nunez, whose unique interpretation of flamenco music has been wowing audiences and critics alike around the world for years.

His quintet, which features the talents of Carmen Cortes, Pablo Martin, Cepillo and Rafael de Utrera, mesmerised the audience at a near capacity Caird Hall.

Earlier in the day, Paraguyan virtuoso Berta Rojas brought a flavour of Latin America to the Hilton Hotel.

DGF artistic director Allan Neave said the atmosphere before the performance was “electric.”

“We’ve got busloads of people arriving in the town and the festival is doing very well,” he said.

“People are coming from all over for it, not just people from Dundee, and it is definitely now a calendar event in the guitar world.”

The festival concluded yesterday with a concert by students at the Caird Hall, followed by a performance by Havana Swing at the Hilton Hotel.
