Vandals smash train windows

VANDALS SMASHED windows on two trains on the newly opened Jamestown viaduct at Inverkeithing late on Monday evening.

British Transport Police believe those responsible were in the vicinity of Inverkeithing cemetery, not far from the viaduct which has been closed for the last eight days as £5 million worth of strengthening work was carried out.

“This was a mindless act that potentially could have resulted in very serious consequences,” said British Transport Police sergeant Lorna Wilson.

“Luckily no-one was injured.”

The cost of repairing the two trains which came under attack is estimated at £1200.

Both incidents happened between 10.30 and 11.05 pm on the main Edinburgh to Aberdeen east coast line.

The two passenger trains hit were the 9.57 pm Glenrothes to Edinburgh train and the 10.16 pm Dundee to Craigentinny service.

Now the police are appealing for help in finding the stone-throwing vandals who were involved.

“It is important that we apprehend those responsible for this and would ask for any information that may assist us,” said Sergeant Wilson.

British Transport Police can be contacted on 0800 405040 or through the local number 01592 641517.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555111.

A spokeswoman for First Scotrail said the incident had affected two services, with a short delay of nine minutes.

Normal service was resumed at 11.40 pm.
