Firm ordered to pay over £40,000

A DUNDEE firm which is in administration has been ordered by an employment tribunal to pay more than £40,000 to eight of its former employees.

Around 40 employees of Simclar (Dundee) Ltd arrived at their work on Dryburgh Industrial Estate on January 31 to find that security guards had been posted around the premises and the car park was locked.

A notice had been put up saying the company was entering administration.

The sheet metal manufacturer’s principal clients had been NCR but it had been recording losses since 2003.

At a meeting with the administrator the following day, the firm’s employees were told they were being made redundant.

The tribunal ruled that, as there had been no consultation with the eight claimants, who had all been long-serving employees, about the redundancy, they were entitled to 90 days’ pay, the equivalent of 12.8 weeks’ wages, as a protective payment.
