SCOTLAND’S FOOD “czar” has endorsed the Scottish Food Fortnight launched at Kathellan, near Kelty, on Saturday. Gillian Kynoch, appointed by the Scottish Executive to help the country shake off its sick man of Europe label, hoped the event would encourage more people to eat healthily. Scotland’s food and health co-ordinator said, “Scottish Food Fortnight is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Scottish food and drink and encourage people of all ages to eat and buy local produce. “It’s great to see so many events taking place across Scotland, encouraging people to try out more low-fat, healthy food options. “These events are a good way for people to sample the unique quality and range of Scottish produce whilst trying out different ways of cooking and eating healthy foods.” Ms Kynoch encouraged consumers to think about where their food comes from. She continued, “I would urge everyone to get involved in Scottish Food Fortnight—either by running an event or simply cooking a Scottish family meal with fresh seasonal produce. “Visit a local farmers’ market or sign up for a local box scheme. “The more of us who choose local food, the more local food will become available for everyone.” Over the next two weeks 90 businesses across Scotland will take part in the event. It was officially opened at Kathellan by award- winning cook, writer and hotelier Claire Macdonald. Kathellan managing director Katherine Melton-Scott said Scottish farmers depended on the public choosing local produce. She said, “Scottish Food Fortnight helps highlight the benefits of buying seasonal, local produce, which is becoming increasingly important if we want to retain choice, superior quality produce and farming in Britain.” |
