Anderson set for step up in class

BUCKHAVEN WELTERWEIGHT Kevin Anderson will be hoping to make history by winning the Commonwealth title tonight.

The 23-year-old former Scottish and UK amateur champion will make a massive step up in class when he challenges Ghana’s Joshua Okine at Kirkcaldy Ice Arena—part of what promises to be a huge night’s boxing in the town.

Anderson, who gave up a possible British title eliminator for the fight, admits he has everything to lose going into the biggest fight of his career to date.

“It is the biggest fight of my career so far but I hope it’s not my last,” he added.

“I’ve dreamed of these fights from an early age and now everything is coming together for me.

“I cannot afford to look beyond this next fight because I know this fighter is no mug and there is a big enough danger there.

“Everything is bubbling along just great but now I am here I’m not going to let this chance pass me by—this is a big step to the next level.

“I hear people talking about titles and I am ambitious but if I dream of what could be then my dreams will die.”

Okine defeated Manchester’s David Barnes, a former British champion, in his hometown earlier this year and Anderson is under no illusions of the task facing him tonight.

Anderson, who is unbeaten in 14 professional contests, maintained, “I haven’t got a bad word to say about him and I’m taking this seriously which is why I have done my homework and not left anything to chance.

“I’ve put in hard weeks of training and sparring and it can’t come quick enough now.

“It is a great boost to have all those fans behind you in Kirkcaldy and I won’t let them down.”

The Anderson-Okine bout, to be screened live on Sky TV, will top a bill sure to attract fight fans from across the country, especially as the Kirkcaldy show will also see former Commonwealth champion Craig Docherty in action.

The Glaswegian, who is making his latest comeback after losing the Commonwealth crown to Alex Arthur earlier this year, will face Ugandan-born prospect John McKay in an eight-round super-featherweight contest.

Glenrothes’ unbeaten light-heavyweight Stevie McGuire will take on Poland’s Marcin Radola, while his lightweight stable-mate Stuart Green faces Cardiff’s Fred Janes.

Bannockburn’s Jamie Coyle takes on Poland’s Arek Malek in a welterweight contest, while Aberdeen light-welterweight Mike Reid is sure to have a huge travelling support to see him fight Cambridge’s Ben Hudson.

Glasgow welterweight Craig Dickson faces tough Belarussian Vadzim Astapuk, with London’s George Hillyard meeting Belfast’s Jamie Gorman in a four-round welterweight contest.
