Nothing unusual about deaths

THERE WERE no suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths of several wading birds and a dolphin which were washed ashore on a Dundee beach.

Environmental enthusiasts had become increasingly concerned after a dolphin was found earlier this week just a short distance from where seven wading birds were picked up in Broughty Ferry last week.

Locals claimed to have seen two dolphins, though a city council spokesperson said only one had been found.

The spokesperson said the dolphin was disposed of because there were no suspicious circumstances and the incidence of the sea creatures being found dead was not unusual.

A spokesperson for the RSPB said birds being washed up in such a way is not uncommon and is referred as sea birds’ whack.

“This happens some-times and is not unusual.”

SEPA was notified of the incident involving the wading birds but, because it was not aware of any pollution, advised the city council to contact the RSPB.

Wildlife experts said the incident involving the dolphins is a little more unusual, but speculated that it has been known for them to be found dead on beaches with no apparent suspicious circumstances.
