eBay romance bid hit after auction is closed

Disappointed—Elizabeth Milne’s auction for a date was removed by eBay.

AN INTERNET auction for a date with a Dundee woman was removed by administrators of the eBay website yesterday.

Seeking romance, Elizabeth Milne (25) started an auction for a night out of a meal, pubbing and clubbing on the website on Monday night.

But after bids soared to £11.49, the auction was removed by the site administrators at noon yesterday, with eBay saying it was in violation of one of the company’s policies.

An Email to Elizabeth from eBay stated, “Your listing was in breach of eBay’s ‘no item’ policy and has been removed.

“Listings that either do not offer an actual item for sale or offer an intangible, non-service item are not allowed.

“Our user agreement states, ‘Your listings may only include text descriptions, graphics, pictures and other content relevant to the sale of that item’.

“Your listing either did not offer an item for sale, offered an intangible, non-service item or an item the existence of which cannot be verified.

“If you re-list this, or any other item that breaches eBay policy, your eBay privileges could be suspended.

“We have credited all associated fees to your account and notified eBay users associated with the transaction that it has been cancelled.”

Elizabeth is now considering appealing against the site’s ruling.

“I am a bit annoyed because I checked eBay’s policies before I posted the auction and couldn’t see anything wrong,” she said.

“They have taken the auction down without giving me the chance to modify it—despite the fact that there are other auctions like this one still on the site.”

Elizabeth started the auction after trying “everything” to find someone since the birth of her daughter.

Her auction description stated, “I’m single, lonely and desperate for a decent night out.”

She says that though disappointed the auction has been stopped, it has given her a self-esteem boost.

“The auction was going great, attracting the interest of people as far away as London. There had been several bids and jokey questions which I had fun replying to. It’s certainly helped my self-esteem.

“I’m just disappointed that the auction has now been taken down and my hopes of romance have been dashed.”
