Residents’ concerns over welfare of dogs

RESIDENTS ARE concerned after a dog trailer containing two young dogs has been set up in a Dundee car park.

The car park in Langlands Street in Stobswell, which is owned by Dundee City Council, is playing host to the two canine lodgers.

Mr Brian Duncan, who works in the area, said, “We have been in touch with all the relevant authorities—the police, the dog wardens and the Scottish Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, but it seems that as the dogs have food and water and are taken out for a 15-minute walk each day, it’s not animal cruelty.

“However, myself and a lot of other people in the area think it is a blatant case of animal cruelty.

“They hardly get taken out at all. I’m sure they are lying in their own mess.

“The dogs are kept in the trailer pretty much all day and are howling all the time.

“I’d say the trailer measures about six feet by four feet and it’s made of metal.”

Councillor for Stobswell Joe Morrow said, “After making contact with the dog wardens and the SSPCA, it seems that this is nothing to do with the law as according to them the dogs are not being kept in a manner which is cruel to them.

“The SSPCA are the arbitrators of what is cruel and what is not, and they do a very good job.

“However, I do think it is inappropriate that a public car park is being used as a housing area for dogs even if they are being kept in a way that is not cruel.

“I am not comfortable with the fact a local authority car park is being used in this way.”
