A NORTH-EAST Fife woman has grown a whopper of a potato in her garden. Sandy Waddell (76) has harvested a three-and-a-half-pound Romano in her vegetable patch at her home in Largoward. The giant tattie measures 10 in long, 5 in wide and has a circumference of 14 in. It has caused quite a stir among Mrs Waddell’s friends and neighbours. And it is likely to be a star attraction when she shows it at Leuchars and District Gardening Club’s autumn flower and craft show this weekend. Mrs Waddell has been growing potatoes since she was a child and grows a crop each year in her garden. But she has never seen one as big as this. “Everyone is asking what I fed it on but I did nothing different. I always make my own compost and I put that on the tatties.” Visitors to the flower and craft show in Balmullo on Saturday will be able to see for themselves the whopping potato. The event, in Burnside Hall, runs from 1.30 until 5 pm. There will also be displays of chrysanthemums, pot plants, fruit and vegetables, and competitive classes for floral art, craft and baking. The children’s section will include a poster competition marking the show’s 75th anniversary. |
