Devine memories of Dundee shows

Sydney signing copies of his book for fans at Ottakar’s last night.

Sydney Devine will never forget the first of many times he performed in Dundee, fully 53 years ago, because he was literally paid in sweeties.

The 13-year-old Sydney received only a packet of gum for his first appearance in the old Sunday night concerts at the Caird Hall in the early 1950s, but has made up for lost earnings since in selling 15 million records and becoming one of Scotland’s best-loved entertainers.

The story was detailed in his new autobiography Simply Devine, which he signed at Dundee’s Ottakars’ bookshop yesterday.

“Rationing was still on and anyway I was looking for a start in the entertainment business rather than getting paid,” he recalled of his Dundee debut.

“The promoter of the shows, a guy called Chris Morrison, wasn’t in the business of giving out big money but he would give five bob to some people, 10 bob to more experienced performers, and I got a packet of chewing gum.’’

However, Sydney went on to become probably the most popular act who regularly visited the city.

In the 70s and 80s the Caird Hall promoters reckoned there were only two sure-fire sell-outs for the venue—the wrestling and Sydney Devine.

“I must have played every venue in the city at one point, from the old Palace, to the Caird Hall, the Whitehall and I even once did a show for the Broughty Ferry Lifeboat Appeal at Green’s Playhouse.

“I’ve always had great support in the city and I hope they never change the Caird Hall. I know some acts find it a difficult place to play but I’ve always found when the place is packed it has a fantastic atmosphere,” he said.

Turning to the book, he said, “There was plenty to tell and I felt now was the right time, but it may only be the start of my career as an author.”

He has reined in touring in recent years—although he made a complete recovery from a heart attack 16 years ago—but has kept up his prolific recording and charity work.

“I’ve got two new albums coming out for Christmas, and most of my work is now for the Marie Curie Cancer Care Fund, which I enjoy very much and is very fulfilling.

“My next appearance in Dundee is for Radio Tay’s Caring For Kids early next year,” he said.
