By Cheryl Wood IT WAS Fife to the fore yesterday when Radio One DJ Edith Bowman had singer-songwriter KT Tunstall as her guest on a special outside broadcast from Waid Academy, Anstruther. Edith is a former pupil of Waid, while KT hails from St Andrews. Edith and co-presenter Colin Murray returned to Edith’s home town of Anstruther during Radio One’s DJs Go Home week. Dressed in school uniform—but combining the black and red blazer and tie with a denim mini skirt—Edith chatted to pupils as she presented her 1-4 pm show. After lunch with youngsters in Waid’s senior cafe, Edith and Colin joined in classes. To an audience of around 200 senior pupils in the assembly hall, KT Tunstall then performed one of her hits, Black Horse And The Cherry Tree and a cover of the White Stripes’ My Doorbell live on air. From the assembly hall stage, Edith also presented an award to a fifth-year pupil, 16-year-old Martin McNamara. MARTIN, WHO is wheelchair-bound, won the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Award for achievement in the face of adversity. Congratulating him, Edith said, “Martin has given his fellow pupils and staff an example of how to be brave, cheerful and uncomplaining in the face of difficult circumstances. “He is an inspiration to younger pupils and those of his own age. “Martin has shown that having to use a wheelchair doesn’t have to stop a person being a full member of the school community. “He is the sort of young person who can teach us a lot about the important things in life.” Once school was out, Edith ended the show with a walk back to her family home. She said, “It’s been an absolutely brilliant day.” The presenters had flown into Edinburgh from Belfast the previous night, after doing Colin’s home broadcast from Belfast Zoo. Tourism body VisitScotland said the broadcast would have helped raise awareness of Fife as a holiday destination. Area director Alan Graham said, “We are delighted Edith has come home to Fife. She is clearly very passionate about her home town and the surrounding area, and we hope this rubs off on a few of the listeners.” |
