DUNDEE TRIALIST Levi Porter has arrived from Leicester City with a seal of approval from former Dens goalkeeper Rab Douglas, writes Ian Roache. The diminutive left-sided midfielder has represented England at every level up to under-19 and is now looking for experience of first-team football to help him eventually make the breakthrough at the Walkers Stadium. And Douglas, who joined the Foxes in the summer from Celtic, certainly believes the 18-year-old can be a good addition to the Dark Blues’ squad. Dundee boss Alan Kernaghan explained, “He is here on the recommendation of big Rab and we could be looking at taking him on loan when the transfer window opens next month. “I have also spoken to (Leicester manager) Craig Levein, who confirmed that Levi is a good prospect who has been on the fringes of their side. “From what I saw of him in training today, he may be small but he is tenacious.” Kernaghan has, however, cancelled a trial arranged for Karim Benounes after the former Lille man injured his ankle. Meanwhile, the Dundee boss, who seemed to rule out his team’s chances of winning the first division title following Saturday’s goalless draw at Stranraer, has tried to clarify his position ahead of this weekend’s home game against leaders St Mirren, who are a whopping 15 points ahead of the Dens men. “What I meant is that the way we have been going of late we are not championship material,” he said. “We have to be able to walk before we can run. “We need to show some form ourselves before we can think about challenging the likes of St Mirren. “The main thing we must improve is our front play and the strikers need to do better. “When you look at our goals for column (only Stranraer, Queen of the South and Brechin have scored less than Dundee’s tally of 20) then you can see that we are struggling in that department. “So we will go into January and take it from there. “Ideally I would like to bring in three or four players if I could but I will have to wheel and deal just like any other manager.” Meanwhile, young Dark Blues defender Mark Allison has joined clubmate Craig O’Reilly in the Scotland under-19 squad that will play friendlies in Portugal today and Thursday. O’Reilly is set to feature this afternoon before heading back home, while Allison will stay on for the second fixture. Dundee are reducing prices for children and offering free admission vouchers in a bid to boost attendances at their home fixtures against St Mirren and Airdrie United. Under-12s can get in for £4 on Saturday and all fans aged under 18 attending the Buddies game will receive a voucher enabling them free entry when the Diamonds visit Dens on Boxing Day. Season-ticket holders aged under 18 will receive a voucher allowing them to bring a friend (also under 18) to see the Airdrie match free of charge. |
