Surgeon awaits status decision

THE TAYSIDE plastic surgeon who carried out a nose operation for which he had “no experience or expertise” with fatal consequences for a Perth grandmother will have his medical status reviewed this week.

Mrs Ada Honeyman underwent surgery at the privately-run Fernbrae Hospital in Dundee in March 1998, when the routine procedure went terribly wrong and she lost more than a litre of blood, dying two days later.

Anas Nassan (49) was found guilty by the General Medical Council of serious professional misconduct three years ago after admitting operating on the wrong area of the nose, mistaking a piece of Mrs Honeyman’s skull for the bone between the nostrils, and cutting through at least one blood vessel.

The consultant was told at the December 2002 hearing that he would not be struck off but that conditions would be put on his registration, preventing him from undertaking similar procedures.

This sanction runs from January 5, 2003 until January 4 next year. It stated that he would “not perform or assist in any intranasal surgery or surgery involving the bony structure of the eye socket.”

On Friday, the GMC’s Fitness to Practise Panel will consider the case at its meeting in Manchester. The panel will decide whether to conclude the case or impose a further sanction.
