| It’s Firhill for flair | |||

By Steve Scott, rugby correspondent BATH MAY be planning a Guinness Premiership-style arm-wrestle by bringing back their heavy mob for tonight’s Heineken Cup clash with Glasgow at Firhill, but the Warriors are planning something a little more flamboyant. Although the only statistical relevance of last week’s outstanding performance, in defeat, by Glasgow at the Recreation Ground last week was confirmation that they won’t qualify for the quarter-finals again this year, Hugh Campbell plans to use the last two brilliant performances by his young side as a launching pad for future success. The wide game, so effective against Edinburgh on their return to Firhill two weeks ago and again at the Rec in the narrow loss last week, appears to be the way forward, and Bath can expect it fast and loose on the close-cut Partick Thistle surface tonight. Their response is to recall the arch-bruiser, England international Danny Grewcock, who was rested for last week’s first leg, but Campbell believes his side can dictate the way tonight’s game is played. “In last week’s game against Bath, and the week before against Edinburgh, the team performed exceptionally well, and there were signs we’re building the consistency of performance we didn’t have earlier in the season. “The team is playing with skill and enthusiasm and it’s good to see our style develop with every match. “The move to our new home here at Firhill definitely helps in that respect, as the pitch is perfect for quick-running rugby.” Glasgow make one change, bringing Dan Turner into the second row while Craig Hamilton drops to the bench. On the Warriors’ injured list, skipper Jon Petrie is still targeting the next match against the Borders on New Year’s Day for his comeback from a shoulder injury, and Donnie Macfadyen is also close to returning. Glasgow (v Bath, Heineken Cup, Firhill tonight 7.30 pm kick-off): G Staniforth; H O’Hare, G Morrison, A Henderson, R Lamont; D Parks, G Beveridge (capt); K Tkachuk, S Lawson, E Murray; T Barker, D Turner; S Swindall, J Barclay, J Beattie. Replacements: F Thomson, L Harrison, G Hayter, C Hamilton, S Pinder, C Gregor, A Craig. Edinburgh coach Todd Blackadder believes last week’s narrow defeat against Toulouse can be the platform to one of the Heineken Cup’s greatest upsets tonight, in the return match at Stade Ernest Wallon. Edinburgh have lost all three of their Heineken visits to the stadium, although they performed admirably in the quarter-final there two years ago, and Blackadder thinks that the gaps they saw at Murrayfield last Saturday can be exploited again. “We have a team that is capable of taking on the best in Europe, and at present there are few better than Toulouse, but we asked them serious questions last week and can do it again,” he said. “There were real positives to come out of last weekend, but it was still frustrating. I think this is a team that can move on and win at Toulouse.” Blackadder has opted for the same side that started Saturday’s match, with the nervous wait for Scott Murray’s dead leg thankfully a fruitful one. Fergus Pringle, whose absence from last week’s game at the 11th hour is still the subject of medical examination, was not considered, and, with Ally Kellock also injured, Alasdair Strokosch fills in at lock. The other change sees Argentina internationalist Francisco Leonelli come on to the bench in place of Michael Pyke, but Simon Webster retains his starting spot. Edinburgh (v Toulouse, Heineken Cup, Stade Ernest Wallon, tonight, 7.30 pm GMT): H Southwell; C Paterson (capt), M Di Rollo, P Jorgensen, S Webster; P Godman, M Blair; D Hewett, D Hall, C Smith; A Strokosch, S Murray; M Mutschin, A Hogg, S Taylor. Replacements: A Kelly, A Jacobsen, S Cross, A McDonald, R Lawson, M Dey, F Leonelli. On Saturday in the French hotbed of Brive the Borders are seeking to follow up their first win over French opposition with their first win on French soil, but will miss their international scrum-half Chris Cusiter, who is being held back for the two matches over the festive period. Steve Bates makes 10 changes, two positional, installing a fresh back row and including place-kicker Charlie Hore and wing Stephen Cranston, although Hore will play in the centre as Gregor Townsend continues his return against one of his former clubs. Borders (v CA Brive-Correze, Stade Chaban Delmas, tomorrow, 5.30 pm GMT): C MacRae; S Danielli, B MacDougall, C Hore, S Cranston; G Townsend, B McKerchar; P Thomson, S Scott, B Douglas; O Palepoi, S MacLeod; J Dalziel, S Gray, S Sititi. Replacements: R Ford, T McGee, M Blair, K Brown, J Weston, N Walker, S Moffat. |
