A SECOND WORLD war bomb was destroyed in a controlled explosion by Royal Navy bomb disposal experts at Easthaven yesterday. The 25lb practice bomb was discovered by a man out walking with his son on the foreshore on Christmas Day at around 2.30 pm. Coastguards were alerted and they cordoned off the area in preparation for yesterday’s visit by the Explosive Ordnance Department (EOD) from Faslane. Coastguard Lindsay Martin said the device, which was largely intact, was still “live.” “It was corroded but it wasn’t holed and you could still see the bracket by which it had been attached to the aeroplane,” he said. “It was lying just below the high water mark and has probably been uncovered by erosion. “It dates back from when Hatton was used as an airfield during the second world war. “A lot of these were dropped around that time and we have found similar items in this area before,” he added. The bomb was lifted from the rocky shore and placed on sand before being sandbagged and destroyed. This is the second piece of ordnance found near Carnoustie recently. A wartime mortar was detonated by an EOD team on the beach near the town’s leisure centre on November 25. |
