A METHIL man has swept the boards at the first World Chocolate Awards. William Curley, who opened a shop in the London suburb of Richmond last year, picked up two gold and two silver medals for his sweets. His araguani truffle was judged to be the best in the world and his filled chuao chocolate also scooped gold. His Earl Grey tea and mint truffles both received the silver seal of approval. The awards follow previous accolades including pastry chef of the year and British dessert of the year prizes. A former pupil of Kirkland High School in Methil, the 34-year-old trained at Gleneagles Hotel and London’s Savoy. Just over a year ago he realised his dream when he and his wife Suzue opened the shop. Sara-Jayne Stanes, chair of the Academy of Chocolate, said the judges were overwhelmed by the number and quality of entries for the inaugural awards. She said, “It is so rewarding to see a growing number of highly creative and perceptive chocolate makers stretching the boundaries of talent and taste and, at the same time, paying significant attention to the highest quality, character and provenance of the chocolate.” |
